Students and Plagiarizing
Why do students plagiarize? And, more importantly, what can educators do to ensure students learn the value of original thought?
A recent survey of more than 2,000 students and 600 instructors by University of Arizona researchers revealed some startling insights: 66% of students surveyed admitted to having cheated, despite the fact that 84% believe that cheaters should be punished. The most common type of offense? Plagiarism. The number of students likely to be caught plagiarizing is four times higher than any other type of cheating.
