Well, I’m not sure if this will be the last we hear about the horrific face-eating Rudy Eugene, aka “Miami Cannibal”, but the autopsy report is out. Now, you might think the autopsy would reveal some amounts of flesh in Eugene’s stomach, especially from all of the surveillance video footage of him tearing and chewing the face off of Ronald Poppo’s face, the homeless man Eugene brutally attacked on the Miami’s MacArthur Causeway; but, the report revealed no such thing. In fact, according the Miami Herald,
…the autopsy report did not reveal any flesh in Eugene’s stomach, only flesh in his teeth.
Eugene’s motivation for this gruesome and bloody attack on Poppo is suspected to be the side effects from snorting bath salts. The autopsy report did find pills in Eugene’s stomach, but the toxicology report will still take weeks to confirm this. According to WSVN, Poppo remains in extremely critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
So, what does this all mean? In a previous post I suggested that people are looking for something, perhaps a sense of purpose and belongingess and felt the urge to “jump on board” with the Zombie Apocalypse bandwagon. Zombies are real! We need to protect ourselves! While this blog, the autopsy report, the Miami Herold, Miami Police Department, CDC, The Huffington Post, and many others are all clearly stating,
Zombies are not real and do not exist, but will the public take notice?
There’s no denying that for a brief moment (and maybe for a bit longer) some folks have had a sense of purpose. Yes, on a superficial level of course, but a sense of purpose, nonetheless.
The more important question is, “when will these same folks turn away from the distraction, come back to reality, and work with their real issues–their own lives?”
I’m not saying that I haven’t been guilty of this myself because I have. But, our society is going through some tough times with the economy, obesity rates, foreign wars or the potential thereof, and many more challenges that also need our attention. And, what about those areas of our lives that we do consider important and valuable, such as family (including our four-legged children), friends, work, spiritual life, and so on? Do not these parts of our lives require the same, if not more attention than the Zombie phenomenon? Imagine what we could accomplish if we did place our energies on ourselves and one another.
I guess some may disagree with me and or suggest various reasons to have such distractions in our lives. I probably wouldn’t disagree with some of their conclusions. But, my point is this:
Distractions can be really helpful when it offers different perspectives, re-direction, alleviates stress or anxiety (maybe even through laughter or tears), raises awareness and education, and etc. But, how are distractions helpful to our society by encouraging fear of something that doesn’t exist or gun sales and the use of synthetic drugs? I don’t see the benefit in that, other than increased revenue for the media and business owners.
