Saint Leo University will always be ingrained in the history of my life.  In my 60s, I decided to enter a new phase of my life.  After a childhood with a mentally ill mother, I spent many years in the financial world.  Deciding to go into a different direction, I pursued a college degree.  After looking at other universities, I knew Saint Leo University was the one.

I was a commuter and sometimes felt I could not attend everything I wanted, but when I did, it was memorable.

Starting with Dr. Patrick Draves (RIP) as an advisor, professor and friend, he gave me the encouragement to continue, when I thought Senior Seminar PSY 499 might stop me from keeping my excellent GPA, or worse yet, not graduating.  Applying for scholarships and winning them, brought me back to when I enjoyed writing.  The only negative part, as Dr. Draves would remind me, that I needed to write in a scientific style, not write as a creative writer!

Dr. Kevin Kieffer required his students to tape mock therapy sessions to learn our strengths and weaknesses in counseling.  Dr. Christopher Cronin introduced us to forensics, which re-enforced my love of criminal justice.  One of my favorite subjects was social psychology, taught by Dr. Tammy Zacchilli.  Other memorable professors were Dr. Cabot and Dr. Padilla (an adjunct at the time).  I never had the chance to have Dr. Shannon Farris, but word is, he fits right into the other great professors at Saint Leo.

I was a commuter and sometimes felt I could not attend everything I wanted, but when I did, it was memorable.

The experience at this university was increased by small classes, allowing individual attention, and support from professors who were available by phone, email, or in person.  I still get tears in my eyes when I go to the main campus for a visit.

Advice to freshmen-juniors:

Your professors are there to help you, take advantage of this.  Many students do not bother to do this.  When doing presentations, in or out of class, and on job interviews, be sure to dress professionally.

Lorinda Eldredge has a BA in psychology from Saint Leo University, a MS in addiction counseling from Grand Canyon University, and is currently a PhD candidate at Northcentral University.  Lorinda has worked many years with children; including tutoring and working for the Hernando school system.  She anticipates working for an organization that offers tutoring and therapy to mentally challenged students, in the fall.

Congratulations!

If you or know someone currently enrolled or alumni of Saint Leo University who has a positive story to share, please email Dr. Shannon Farris at shannon.farris@saintleo.edu.
