[VIDEO] iO Tillett Wright: Fifty shades of gay

From TED.com:

“iO’s photography can be seen regularly in two features in The New York Times: Notes from the Underground and The Lowdown. She is also the creator of Self Evident Truths—an ongoing project to document the wide variety of experiences in LGBTQ America. So far, she has photographed about 2,000 people for the project. Her goal: 10,000 portraits and a nationwide rethinking of discriminatory laws.”

“Bill Banning Gay Conversion Therapy For Minors”

Pictures used to cure homosexuality

“California Governor Jerry Brown on Saturday signed a historic bill that will protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) minors from “reparative” therapies administered by mental health professionals aimed at altering sexual orientation or gender identities and expressions…”

“Conversion” or “reparative” therapies include a wide variety of techniques from counseling to shock therapy to — in extreme cases — exorcism, used in an attempt to “cure” individuals of their homosexual and transgender orientations and identities.”

The Last Bastion: Religious Exclusion and the Invisible Minority

It’s no surprise that our political polarization should break along religious lines, with Fundamentalist Christians, Jews, and Muslims and many Catholics gathering right, while more open-minded faith communities lean left. This is not new. Throughout history, hard times have brought out extremists of all kinds, with one side attributing our troubles to the “wrath of God” and the other disparaging those who oppose progress as Luddites and haters. Yet just because it’s so doesn’t mean it’s right. From both a religious and psychological perspective, this relentless battering takes its toll on our personal beliefs as well as our social values and mandates.

It is unhealthy, unproductive, and—okay, I’ll say it—unacceptable.

UPDATE! NARTH calls on another expert to say, “Gays can change.” (video)

Dr. Nicholas Cummings, Former APA President (1979-1980)

Blog master’s note:
I find the below information very disconcerting by NARTH. Dr. Robert Spitzer, in a previous post, specifically called out NARTH and other anti/ex-gay agenda groups to stop using his invalid research results regarding “gays can change.” Since that time, NARTH has attempted to find a replacement for Dr. Spitzer with a former APA president, Nicholas Cummings, to revive their cause. Dr. Robert Spitzer’s strong video interview message to the anti/ex-gay groups, “the people that are pushing the ex-gay idea, are so full of hatred for homosexuality…”

Dr. Robert Spitzer’s message to groups pushing the ex-gay and anti-gay agenda:

I’m curious as to whether they have said anything or how they live with the fact that the one study that they’ve always been citing, has now been taken away from them. I would think that’s a pretty rough place to be in. The people that are pushing the ex-gay idea, are so full of hatred for homosexuality really, that I don’t think that they can respond in an ethical way.

Boy’s ‘Ain’t no Homos Gonna Make it to Heaven’ song receives praise and standing ovation from church members.

Whew! I’m not sure how this happens in one week, but here’s a different video, hot off the presses, (5/29/12) of another church promoting discriminatory messages against gays and lesbians, but this time through a 5-year old singing,

Psychiatrist apologizes for flawed research that “gays can change” and giving ammunition to anti-gay groups such as a local pastor calling for the ultimate death of queers and homosexuals. (Warning: Graphic video)

(Adapted from the Chronicle of Higher Education on May 18, 2012): Robert L. Spitzer retired years ago but his influence has not. That’s why his recantation last month of his own paper, research purporting to show that therapy could turn some homosexuals into heterosexuals, has such extraordinary resonance. The work of Dr. Spitzer, a psychiatrist and Columbia University emeritus professor–who actually got homosexuality removed from the medical list of mental disorders in 1973–rippled across society. 9-year old joins religious group protestors with a message of his own that has taken the country by storm.

Via Gawker comes this picture of 9-year old Josef Miles protesting the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church. Apparently Miles and his mother were driving around Topeka, Kansas, spotted the group chanting its typical hate, and Miles asked to pull over so he could stage a solo protest.
