What can I do with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology?

College is an exciting time but as you complete your degree it is important to start thinking about future career possibilities and graduate school.  You are invited to attend a career and graduate school advising session for psychology majors on Tuesday April 16th at 8:00 PM Eastern Standard Time.  These advising session are offered at least once per 8 week term.   The purpose of the session is to provide students the opportunity to ask questions regarding careers in psychology as well as ask about the graduate school application process.  I will be sharing some resources with you that Saint Leo’s Career Services Office has available.  It will also be a time for you to interact with other online psychology majors.

The session will be held in my Eluminate Virtual Office at the following link:

Guinea Pigs and Autism: A helpful combination

As anyone who has taken their pet into a public location will tell you, the pet makes it easy, unavoidable even, to strike up conversations with strangers.

Given this effect, Maggie O’Haire at the University of Queensland conducted a study to explore if animals could also help children with autism spectrum disorders by helping them connect with other people.

In this study, O’Haire and her colleagues introduced two guinea pigs into 15 different classrooms and looked at how the presence of the animals affected the interactions of autistic children with adults and non-autistic kids.  The results showed that autistic children were significantly more talkative and cheerful in the presence of guinea pigs than in the presence of toys and they were also more likely to make physical contact and interact with others.

O’Haire has several theories as to why animals might have this effect:

  • First of all, animals facilitate social interaction by giving people a common focus of attention.
  • Additionally, animals have a calming effect which may help autistic children that see their classroom as a stressful environment.  Perhaps the animals made them feel comfortable enough to begin interacting with peers.

Have you ever walked into a restaurant or fast food place where the staff is smiling excessively and appears happy to be there?

Fact: Restaurant employees are likely the only people who you don’t know by name who handle things you put in your mouth.

Fact is many restaurants and fast food places (especially if part of a chain) do have rules for employees that require them to constantly appear happy when in the presence of guests.  Some places even phrase it as a smile being a part of the uniform.  This concept of employees presenting specific emotions while working regardless of how they really feel as  ‘emotional labor‘, invented by sociologist Arlie Hochschild. Would you take this? A doctor’s experimentation with antipsychotics

In 1993 Richard Bentall, an expert on psychosis from the University of Bangor in Wales, voluntarily took an antipsychotic drug and at first thought he’d get through unscathed.
It wasn’t until someone asked him to fill in a form that he noticed some issues. Bentall explained that he “looked at this test and I couldn’t have filled it in to save my life. It would have been easier to climb Mt Everest.”

That was the least of his troubles. Bentall developed akathisia – unpleasant sensations of inner restlessness and an inability to sit still.  He also developed a feeling helplessness accompanied by depression. “They tried to persuade me to do these cognitive tests on the computer and I just started crying,” Bentall recalled.
